Earl May Seed & Nursery has a rich tradition in the seed industry. Prior to the founding of the company in 1919, Earl May worked his way through law school by selling garden seed on horseback for the D.M. Ferry Seed Company. In the 1920's, the nursery sold seed through catalogs. Great pride in quality seeds was evident in letters to and from customers. As May wrote in one of his seed catalogs: "Don't envy the Zinnias across the fence, grow some yourself, with blooms immense, 'I want the best' you're sure to say, so buy your seed from Earl E. May."
