If you’re starting to see large, silken webs draped across tree branches, you’re not alone. Fall webworm caterpillars are out in full force, and they’re busy weaving their distinctive web masses in trees across our landscapes and gardens. These pests can quickly cause unsightly damage by feeding on the leaves within their protective webs, and the webs can expand significantly as they grow.

At Earl May Garden Center, we’re your go-to destination for expert advice and proven products to help you manage this seasonal nuisance. Whether you prefer traditional or organic solutions, we have everything you need to protect your trees.

Effective Control Solutions for Fall Webworms:

Most Effective Option:

  • Permethrin-based products, such asLiquid Eight spray, offer fast and reliable control. For best results, apply with enough pressure to reach inside the web masses and coat the leaves where the caterpillars are feeding.

Organic Options:

  • Spinosad-based products (like Captain Jack’s Deadbug Brew)
  • Liquid Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) sprays
  • Be sure to check the product label to confirm that caterpillars are listed for effective treatment.

According to Iowa State University Extension, when applying insecticides for webworm control, it’s essential to use a specially designed hose-end or ready-to-spray (RTS) applicator that provides enough pressure to penetrate the silk tent and target the caterpillars hidden inside.

Don't Confuse Fall Webworms with Eastern Tent Caterpillars

It’s easy to mistake Fall Webworms for Eastern Tent Caterpillars, but timing is a key difference. Eastern Tent Caterpillars are active much earlier in the season and have usually vacated their nests by this time of year. Fall Webworms typically first appear in August and September. The control methods are similar, so if you’re unsure which pest you’re dealing with, you should get good results either way by following the recommendations above.
