Details

Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season lawn grass and one of the most popular turf grasses in the Midwest. It is fast growing once established and has the ability to develop a good root system against drought. Bluegrass has good "self repairing" capabilities if it is damaged.

Bluegrass has a later green-up period and is often seeded with rye grasses for this reason, but it is also commonly sown straight or used for over-seeding. Re-seeding affords the homeowner a chance to upgrade the present lawn with improved qualities. Once established, bluegrass is one of the longest living grasses available.

Bluegrass can be easily established from seed. Establishment depends upon a well prepared seedbed, application of a starter fertilizer and following up with a consistent watering schedule while the seedlings develop. Bluegrass seed will germinate in 10-14 days given soil temperatures are above 55 degrees, but full establishment takes time (one to two months in not unusual). This is one of the primary reasons to include a nurse crop such as perennial ryegrass which germinates in 5-7 days, when seeding on bare ground.

Bluegrass is not a highly drought tolerant grass but it has the ability to go dormant in severe situations and can recover if watered intermittently to keep the lawn growing minimally during drought.

Planting & Maintenance Tips

To achieve the best results with your blue grass seed, prepare the soil by removing weeds and loosening the top few inches. Spread seed evenly using a broadcast spreader and lightly rake it in for good seed-to-soil contact. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination occurs, typically within 10–14 days when temperatures exceed 55°F.

Once established, mow regularly at about 2–3 inches and fertilize seasonally to promote healthy growth and vibrant color.
