Directions for Use:
When to Plant: Plant any time from spring to fall. Growing conditions are most favorable in early spring and early fall. If sown during warm months, it simply requires more watering.
Preparing Your Area:
- For New Lawns: Work the soil to a depth of 4 inches and apply special seed starting fertilizer. Rake level to a finish grade just prior to seeding.
- To Overseed: Rake or aerate to remove debris and to help provide seed-soil contact. You may need to add a light layer of top soil for the seed to take root.
- Repairing Bare Spots: Mow closely. Rake out debris of dead grass and leaves to scratch soil surface. Add top soil if needed.
Fertilizing: For best results, use Earl May Lawn Starter Fertilizer for new lawns at the recommended rate.
Seeding: Apply evenly at the rate recommended. Apply with a hand broadcaster, a wheeled spreader or by hand. For best results, make two passes in two different directions at half the recommended rate. Rake seed into the top 1/8 inch of the soil and lightly roll the area to firm the soil around the seed. Good seed-soil contact will greatly improve germination.
Overseeding: Sow after mowing existing turf as short as possible and adding top soil to any low spots.
Mulching (Optional): Mulching can help conserve moisture and reduce erosion while the seed is trying to germinate. We recommend adding a seeding mulch of some kind on bare soil, especially slopes. DO NOT use unprocessed straw from straw bales for mulching. This introduces weeds and wheat seeds that will grow, and you will have tall, light-colored plants until winter. Plus, unprocessed straw is inefficient and will blow around, leaving many areas bare. Specially processed, chopped, and clean, compressed straw products are available and will cover twice as much area for the price.
Watering: Seeds require consistent moisture to germinate. Keep the seed bed moist for 3-4 weeks. Several light waterings per day is best. Keep moist until your first mowing. Once all the grass germinates, water less frequently but more deeply. Ideally, established lawns need 1 inch of water per week for best growth and color. DO NOT apply any weed killers to new lawns until after the third mowing.
